Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock es un videojuego de música desarrollado por Neversoft y publicado por Activision y RedOctane.
Es el tercer título de la serie de videojuegos Guitar Hero y el cuarto en total.
Guitar Hero III fue primero lanzado para PlayStation 3 y Xbox 360, con la versión de PlayStation 2 siendo desarrollada por Budcat Creations y la de Wii a través de Vicarious Visions. Aspyr Media asistió en la conversión a PC y Mac a finales de 2007. Debido a la adquisición de RedOctane por Activision, Harmonix Music Systems ya no está implicado en los títulos de la serie Guitar Hero; en cambio, la compañía está desarrollando actualmente Rock Band que es su competidor.
Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock mantiene el estilo de juego como los otros juegos de la serie. El jugador usa un control con forma de guitarra para simular la interpretación de música rock tocando a tiempo notas que se desplazan por la pantalla. Guitar Hero III incluye un modo de carrera cooperativo y "Batallas de jefes" contra personajes no jugadores y otros jugadores, el juego es también el primero en ofrecer juego en línea para PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 y Wii. El juego posee más de 70 canciones incluidas en el disco, las cuales, en contraste a anteriores títulos, son másters de grabación. Las versiones para Xbox 360 y PlayStation 3 son capaces de descargar canciones adicionales. El juego además incluye a varios músicos como Slash (Guns n' Roses/Slash's Snakepit/Velvet Revolver), Tom Morello (Rage Against the Machine/Audioslave), y Bret Michaels (Poison) como personajes seleccionables. Se da la presentación de DragonForce con la canción "Through the fire and flames", que es la más difícil y la oficial del videojuego.
El juego fue bien recibido, aunque los críticos notaron la diferencia en la sensación del juego que era diferente a la de los títulos previos debido al cambio de desarrollador. El juego fue el más vendido de 2007, en ambos términos de unidades vendidas y de ingresos aportados.
Guitar Hero III logró marcar un record y un precedente, al lograr superar los 1.000 millones de dólares a nivel ventas, sumando las ventas de las versiones de todas las consolas, y además sumando el dinero generado por los contenidos descargables. Entre las canciones destacadas se encuentran: "Talk dirty to Me" de Poison,"Miss Murder" de AFI, "The Number of the Beast" de Iron Maiden, One de Metallica, "Knights of Cydonia" de Muse,"Hit me with your best shoot" de Pat Benatar, "Avalancha" de Héroes del silencio, "Paranoid" de Black Sabbath, "Stricken" de Disturbed, "Before I Forget" de Slipknot, entre otros.

El tema "Through the Fire and Flames" – DragonForce ,es el mas dificil de tocar en cualquiera de sus modalidades en especial en modo experto, un título confirmado por Guinness World Records. En un video promocional de Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock, Herman Li jugó en nivel de dificultad dificil , pero sólo completo el 6% de la canción antes de que perdiera.Cuando se pone la canción en el nivel experto (el nivel más alto en el juego), en la pantalla de las versiones de Wii y PlayStation 2 aparece el mensaje "Good Luck", en tanto que si se completa la canción en el nivel experto de Xbox 360 se obtiene el "The Inhuman Achievement", en referencia al album Inhuman Rampage de DragonForce de donde proviene la cancion. Tras la inclusión de "Through the Fire and Flames" en Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock, las ventas de CDs de DragonForce aumento en una semana en un 126%. Este tema contiene un total de 3722 notas y es muy dificil completarlo perfecto en experto. Uno de los mejores jugadores de Guitar Hero se llama Danny Johnson y hasta ahora es el unico en el mundo que ha podido tocar la cancion de Through the Fire And the Flames en expert al 100%. Chris Chike:Un joven de 16 años proveniente de Rochester, Minnesota en un evento que fue organizado por Twin Galaxies, los editores oficiales del libro Guinness World Records: Gamer’s Edition , registro el primer record de la canción con un puntaje de 899,703 puntos.
Danny Johnson: Un joven de 14 años que logró superar el anterior record, con un puntaje de 973,954 puntos durante una exhibición en Best Buy en Midtown Manhattan, organizado por el Guinness World Records.
En la página web de youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DFG6xVT27gU se puede ver como este ultimo record es superado con 985,742 puntos en experto en un video con un primer plano de sus manos y sonidos de su propia guitarra guitar hero para corroborar que no es un truco el nombre es Daniel Pulgarin de 13 años que vive en Bogotá, Colombia,el dice que todo se lo debe a su hermano que le anseño a jugar en este modo de juego.
Danny Johnson: Hizo un tambien record en la cancion "Through the Fire and Flames" con una puntuacion de 983,250 puntos. Y Danny Johnson volvio a romper el record con un puntaje de 986,290.
